Zebra Crossing

This tiny rhyme has fun with a pun, and always wins a slow, stretching smile from children when I read it out, as the two meanings click in their heads. There’s the familiar zebra crossing that we all use at times to get safely across the road, and then there’s the zebra – zoo escapee? – who wisely chooses this safety option for getting across too.

There’s also fun with spots and stripes – ‘Nobody spotted the stripes’, and a satisfying but unusual rhyme at the end – ‘camouflage’ rhyming with ‘large’.

This tiny poem also evokes the slow, calm way zebras move, when at leisure, and this one has quite a presence – large and stately – although unnoticed!

So there’s LOTS to talk about when sharing ‘Zebra Crossing’ with your children.
