Why Poems?

In this video, I explain how my own early struggles with reading spurred me to write short, punchy, accessible poems for today’s new and learner readers. Of course there are plenty of other great reasons to write poems for children, and I begin by mentioning some – such as the fun both writer and reader can have with poetic features and formats and – mentioned later – how so much can be encapsulated within just a few lines, in terms of stories and concepts. There is so much more to poetry than can be expressed in a brief chat, and my focus here is chiefly on the accessibility of short, punchy poems, especially for the less confident reader.
