Get creative with favourite words

Celebrate a letter with its best words!

This is fun and fulfilling for adults downwards, and can be done any day, any time, or as an ongoing process through the week.

So, pick any letter from the alphabet – let’s say P – and write it big and bold in the centre of a sheet of paper.  Now think of words or phrases beginning with P, or with P in them, that you find pleasing. Perhaps they represent things you love, or maybe you just like the sound or look of them, as we do with names.

My P words would include peace, perfection, passion fruit, peach, peachy sunset, pure, limpid, pleasure, sumptuous (the p makes it for me), purring, pillow, posy, primrose, pale blue (my favourite colour), pinks (the flower), pretty, pearl, pearly, ample, apple, plume, supple, empower, pristine, petal.

Your chosen words might be quite different. Add as thoughts come, scattering them around the page, perhaps in different colours. You might like to decorate your page and turn it into an eye-catching poster for wall or noticeboard.

Here’s one I’ve done with K. Again, you’ll probably cringe at some of my favourites, but then, I might shrug at some of yours!

Do a new one every two weeks to fill the year, perhaps. If you run out of usable letters, take sounds, like sh, ch, th or ar.

Do share! Feedback always welcome too, here or on Twitter @Katypoet.

Meanwhile, I’ve started recording my poems on YouTube, if you fancy a watch/listen:

  1. It’s always fun to get kids involved in wordgames & activities. Mine love playing boggle. Looking forward to trying this out.
